Town guidesThe Guide covers not only the main towns of Aylsham, Cromer, Fakenham,
Holt, North Walsham, Sheringham and Wells-next-the-Sea, but also the surrounding villages.
Even the smallest village shop is listed, in order that visitors can have as much
information as possible about the area. Varied shopping, good food and interesting places
abound. Take the time to spend a day in and around each of these towns and discover the
variety of life that is North Norfolk. |
Aylsham
on the river Bure dates back to pre-Norman times.
The Bure Valley Railway (15 inch gauge) runs from here to Wroxham, passing through 9 miles
of glorious countryside. It has its own town centre market on Mondays providing a
colourful meeting place early in the week for those coming in from the surrounding
villages. Modern Aylsham is a lively town whose traders offer a good range of goods with a
personal friendly service. There is an in-town supermarket. Most of the pubs offer good
food. There is an hotel on the outskirts of town. Car Parking is adequate except on market
days. |
Cromer
is a cosmopolitan seaside town offering local
shopping, entertainment, a Pier Theatre, Cinema and services for the summer visitor. There
is a small permanent indoor market and a large carpark outdoor market on Fridays.
Supermarket shopping is available in town plus two larger sites on the edge of town. There
are several hotels, restaurants, cafes, pubs and take-aways providing good food. Parking
at the supermarkets is ample and in-town parking is normally reasonably available except
on market days. |
Fakenham
is the natural centre for natural Norfolk, with the
coast just 10 miles away. It offers a wide range of facilities including a department
store, an in-town supermarket, one on the edge of town plus a hypermarket outside town.
The town shops also offer a wide range of goods and services. There is a large market on
Thursdays very well attended by locals and visitors alike. With two hotels, several pubs
and cafes in the town, eating out is not a problem. In-town parking is sometimes a little
difficult on market days, but otherwise adequate. Out of town at the supermarket and
hypermarket there is ample space. The Race Course with several meetings each year, is
little more than walking distance from the centre. |
Holt
an Historic Georgian Town, provides probably the
most diverse range of quality shopping, including a department store, in the region.
Although the town no longer has an open market, the friendly country atmosphere still
prevails amongst the town's traders. There is a mini market and a supermarket in the town,
also an old style grocery store. Food is available all day in numerous cafes &
bistros, tea rooms and pubs. There are also restaurants and several take-aways. The town
has two hotels. Parking is normally quite reasonable except at the very busiest times. The
coast is just 7 miles away. |
North Walsham
has plenty of variety to offer shoppers. The main
street has most of the amenities that are needed by the local and visitor alike and the
Thursday market that fills the street is well attended. There are also several side
streets and small Lokes that hide other secrets to the town. Places to eat are plentiful,
from the local pub or cafe to the town's hotel. Parking is sometimes a little difficult
near the centre. |
Sheringham
provides a slightly more relaxed resort than Cromer,
which is only a few miles away for those who prefer a little more highlife. There is a
popular Wednesday and Saturday market and the town's shops and the supermarket generally
provide a good choice for shoppers. There are pubs, cafes, restaurants and hotels
providing excellent cuisine. Parking is not normally a problem except on a busy market
day. |
Wells-next-the-Sea
is still a working port with several inshore fishing
boats berthed here. The summer months see visiting Yachtsmen. There is a Harbour narrow
gauge Railway from the Quay to the beach and the Wells - Walsingham light Railway starts
just outside town. The town offers a wide variety of shopping and as may be expected,
locally caught fish is a speciality. Market day is Wednesday and there is a small Flea
Market on Sundays. With an Hotel and several restaurants plus pubs offering good food,
eating out is a pleasure. Car parking is reasonable at most times. |
